Short Course Admissions Criteria

In order to apply for an American Semester Program Short Course, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Have finished at least 1 year of university
  • Are proficient in the English Language (TOEFL (IBT) of 79, IELTS of 6.5), unless you are applying to the American Language & Culture program
  • Have some background in the course topic you are applying for
  • Are able to secure a Tourist visa for the United States

English Proficiency

Proof of English Proficiency is required for students who will require a visa to attend an American Semester Program Short Course. If you are a citizen of a country which is eligible for a Visa Waiver Program to come to the USA, you do not need to show proof of English Proficiency. However, applicants should be aware that many students in each course will be native English speakers (ie. Australian, British, etc.). Applicants should feel confident enough in the English language to participate in a fast-paced learning environment in English.

If you need a visa to visit the USA and participate in an ASP Short Course, you must provide proof of English Proficiency! This is required for MSU to issue visa paperwork for you.

Standardized English Language test results are required unless English is designated as the primary language of instruction at your home institution. These TOEFL results are an example of accepted test scores:

  • Paper Based TOEFL (PBT) 550, with no sub score below 52
  • Internet Based TOEFL (IBT) 79, with no sub score below 17

We also accept other standardized English language tests.

If you would like to talk with someone in the American Semester Program regarding your English proficiency, do not hesitate to send an email to american(at)msu.edu
