Short Course Admissions Criteria

In order to apply for an American Semester Program Short Course, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Have finished at least 1 year of university
  • Are proficient in the English Language (TOEFL (IBT) of 79, IELTS of 6.5)**
  • Have some background in the course topic you are applying for
  • Are able to secure a Tourist visa for the United States*

We are looking for applicants who are in good standing at their home universities. While reviewing your application, we may contact you for additional materials such as letters of recommendation to support your application.

If you are not currently studying in a university program (i.e. have graduated), you may still apply to an ASP Short Course. Applications will be considered on a case by case basis.

English Proficiency**

English Proficiency is NOT required for applicants to the Global Studies: American Language & Culture Program. This program is for learners of the English language, and participants will take a placement test upon arrival to the program.

Proof of English Proficiency IS required for students who will require a student visa to attend one of the following Short Courses:

If you are a citizen of a country which is eligible for a Visa Waiver Program to come to the USA, you do not need to show proof of English Proficiency and will not require a visa to participate in the program. However, applicants should be aware that many students in each course will be native English speakers (ie. Australian, British, etc.). Applicants should feel confident enough in the English language to participate in a fast-paced learning environment in English. The American Semester Program reserves the right to request Proof of English Proficiency from any applicant.

If you cannot travel to the USA on a Tourist Visa and need a student visa* to visit the USA and participate in an ASP Short Course, you must provide proof of English Proficiency! This is required for MSU to issue visa paperwork for you.

Standardized English Language test results are required unless English is designated as the primary language of instruction at your home institution. These TOEFL results are an example of accepted test scores:

  • Internet Based TOEFL (IBT) 79, with no sub score below 17

We also accept other standardized English language tests.

If you would like to talk with someone in the American Semester Program regarding your English proficiency, do not hesitate to send an email to american(at)msu.edu
