Have You Purchased Your Flight to Michigan?

We recommend purchasing travel insurance with your flight. Furthermore, many students buy open-ended tickets that allow flexibility with return flights.  This is helpful for some students that add on a semester or plan to travel within the USA after completing their studies. 

Getting Around the Lansing Area

Getting around MSU and East Lansing is easiest by foot, bike, or bus. Use the following online resources to help plan your journey:

Trains & Buses

Public transportation and the train and bus system is not as extensive in the US as it is in other countries. However, you can take the train or bus to visit cities inside and outside of Michigan.

Major airports in Michigan are also accessible from campus:

Detroit (DTW) -- easily accessed with the Michigan Flyer Bus from East Lansing

About the Local Area

East Lansing

MSU is located in the city of East Lansing - a classic college town. There is a wide variety of shops, restaurants, festivals, parks, and community activities going on throughout the year. Click on the links below to explore:

Lansing

Located just to the west of East Lansing is Lansing - the capital of Michigan. Here you can visit the capital building and Michigan Historical Museum, but also discover Old Town. About the Midwest

Michigan is in an area of the U.S. called the midwest. The states neighboring Michigan have so much to offer, and they are easily accessible by bus, train, and plane. Be sure to make plans to visit cities such as these while you are here:

  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Milwaukee, Wisconsin
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Columbus, Ohio

Canada

It's also easy to visit Canada while you study at MSU! Toronto and Niagara Falls are within driving distance from East Lansing. Just be sure to check into the visa process and get a travel signature on your US Visa Paperwork before you go.
