Short Course Admissions Requirements

Short Course Admissions Criteria

In order to apply for an American Semester Program Short Course, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Have finished at least 1 year of university
  • Are proficient in the English Language (TOEFL (IBT) of 79, IELTS of 6.5)
  • Have some background in the course topic you are applying for
  • Can travel to the United States on a Visa Waiver OR are able to secure a Tourist visa for the United States*

We are looking for applicants who are in good standing at their home universities. While reviewing your application, we may contact you for additional materials such as letters of recommendation to support your application.

If you are not currently studying in a university program (i.e. have graduated), you may still apply to an ASP Short Course. Applications will be considered on a case by case basis.

English Proficiency

Proof of English Proficiency is not required to apply to ASP Short Courses; however, ASP reserves the right to request proof of English Proficiency upon review of your application. Applicants should be aware that many students in each course will be native English speakers (ie. Australian, British, etc.). Applicants should feel confident enough in the English language to participate in a fast-paced learning environment in English. The American Semester Program reserves the right to request Proof of English Proficiency from any applicant.

If you would like to talk with someone in the American Semester Program regarding your English proficiency, do not hesitate to send an email to american(at)msu.edu

*Participants in ASP Short Courses are eligible to travel to the US as tourists with either ESTA or a B1/B2 visa. Your situation depends on your citizenship and ESTA eligibility through the US Department of Homeland Security, but generally citizens of countries eligible for the Visa Waiver Program should apply for, and be eligible, to participate in this program with ESTA approval. If you are not eligible for ESTA, contact us immediately to discuss the application process for a B1/B2 tourist visa issued by the US Department of State. Regardless of your admission to an ASP Short course, ASP cannot guarantee your approval for ESTA or a tourist visa to the United States.
