The Center for Gender in Global Context (GenCen) is excited to announce the awarding of $9,000 in summer scholarships! With funds remaining from reduced expenses during the pandemic, the Center under the leadership of Dr. Stephanie Nawyn decided the best use of the money was to get it into the hands of students. A portion of the scholarship funds come from GenCen’s generous donors: https://gencen.isp.msu.edu/give/
The Women’s Studies Summer Tuition Scholarships support students who are taking WS courses to help cover tuition costs for summer classes, including courses ranging from WS403 Women and Change in Developing Countries to WS301 Sexual Violence Against Women and Children. This year, nine students were awarded $1,000 through this program. These students do incredible work in and out of the classroom and GenCen is thrilled to support their enrollment in summer WS classes.
After an incredibly difficult year of remote learning during the pandemic, feedback from students reaffirmed how essential support is for maintaining degree progress:
"I am obtaining my women's and gender studies degree because I want to advocate for gender equity in sexual healthcare. This past year has been difficult with the pandemic and in order to maintain progress in my degree I needed to take a summer WS course, so receiving the scholarship from the GenCen has been relieving! The GenCen is very supportive of the students in this program and I am grateful to be able to take a summer class now!" — Eliza Samra
